A little essay I wrote about some of the YouTube comments I got after posting that video re: body image.
Pro: I’m going to be YouTube famous, maybe? Huffington Post! Woohoo!
Con: This is going to come back to bite me in my job-hunting ass. But maybe not because I’m in progressive Denver?
PLEASE STILL HIRE ME, PEOPLE! I PROMISE I’M NOT A DRAG KING! Sigh. I better come out with “Shit Jewish Moms Say” quickly… so I’m known for something else.
SHIT STRAIGHT GUYS SAY TO LESBIANS.
Yeah. Let’s go ahead and put it out here: I make a REALLY ugly guy. And I don’t have the best camera. But it’s out there!
I’ve learned a lot in my experience in the South. And my experience here has also reinforced a lot of things that I thought I already knew.
Brit and I have been working day and night trying to raise funds for As We Are: LGBT Voices from the Bible Belt for the last month. We have come down to our last 24 hours and sadly, we’re not going to meet the Kickstarter goal. But we have been met with such kindness all over the Internet. We’ve gotten shout-outs from a bevy of celebrities (though some donations would’ve been nice…), almost 600 “likes” on the page, and 112 very amazing backers.
With 24 hours to go, we met our very first opposition. In my promotion of this book, I targeted people on Twitter who live in the Bible Belt and also had some sort of liberalness on their profile. In this case, this woman was followed by the NoH8 Campaign, The Trevor Project, and a slew of others. I thought for sure, she’d at least give us a RT. But no:

Truthfully, I wish it had been one of the Phelps family to have been our opposition, but it’s this woman.
She has inspired me to discuss the difference between being Christian and being A Christian. In my experience with hatred, belittling, and Bible thumping, it has always been those who say, “I am A Christian.” These types of people bred a little girl who, when we were in 3rd grade, told me: “We can’t be friends because you’re Jewish.” These are the same people heading up this year’s Republican party candidates. They make me sad and angry. More than anything though, they scare me.
Those who don’t define themselves by their religion, and just are Christians, have been some of the kindest people I’ve ever met. They aren’t overly legalistic, and they absolutely have the kind of morality I want to be around. They’re the ones who don’t slap the Bible on their knee every time they are trying to prove a point. These people don’t seem to think that you need to be God-fearin’ and Bible-huggin’ to be a good person. So why such a huge disparity? I just don’t get it. You can pick and pull at verses all you want, but the bottom line is the golden rule.
DO unto others as you would have done to yourself.
Jesus would agree. I’m sure of it.
5 days now. Let’s do the damn thing.
Let’s start with the bad:
We have just 6 short days to get to our Kickstarter goal of $12,000!
The good:
An anonymous donor has agreed to donate the last $2,000 if we can just get to $10,000 in the next 5 days.
I know these are steep goals, but I believe in the strength of the LGBT community…
This is an important discussion. Read the whole thing and chime in.
It’s no secret that millions of Americans are pushing for gay rights, namely the right to marry someone of the same sex. And it’s obvious that there’s been a boom in the non-profit world for organizations aimed at helping gay people of all ages.
But the question I want to pose is this: Where do…
Awesome dot com slash Brit!
The GA Voice was kind enough to write up an article about As We Are and our Kickstarter campaign. You can read it here!
Please keep spreading the word and donating if you can!
THANKS!
You all should reblog this or donate money or just watch it and listen to my charming reading voice over a Jesus sign.
The kickstarter campaign has begun! Check it out here!!!
Can we agree that the Mary Martin version of Peter Pan is probably a root for a lot of sapphically-swayed… swaying? Like, weren’t a ton of girls confused (unknowingly) about a woman playing Peter?
Gender binary! I’ve never used that phrase in my life, but that sounds appropriate, doesn’t it?
